The SMA Extreme Heat Policy provides recommendations for a range of sports based on participation rates, and divides sports into five “Sport Risk Classification” groups based on the combined effects of exercise intensity and the clothing and equipment worn by participants.
SMA provide a useful tool to assist people in understanding the heat stress risk, accessible via the following link;
Sports Medicine Australia Extreme Heat Tool
For matches on natural grass, please select “Football (soccer)” for the sport.
For matches on synthetic fields, please select “Field Hockey” for the sport (as the tool does not have a specific risk classification for football played on synthetic fields).
Please also ensure you enter the location of the field.
The tool will then provide a colour coded chart when a threshold is reached.
